Accuracy
How accurate is an internet speed test?
Last updated: 4 October 2026
No internet test is perfect. This page explains how accurate a Hyndr Internet Health Check is, what can change your result, and what a result can and cannot prove.
1. Results are estimates
Hyndr measures your connection by sending temporary test data between your browser and a measurement server, then timing how fast and how steadily it travels. The numbers you see (download speed, upload speed, ping, jitter and delay under load) are careful estimates, not exact readings of your internet line.
Two good tests run a few minutes apart can show slightly different numbers. That is normal. Look at the overall pattern rather than a single digit.
2. One test describes one path at one moment
A Health Check measures the route between your device and one test server, at the time you run it. It does not measure every website, game server or app you use. A website hosted far away, or a busy game server, can still feel slow even when your Hyndr result is good.
Internet conditions also change during the day. Evenings are often busier because more people in your area are online at the same time.
3. What can affect your result
- Wi-Fi: distance from the router, walls, and nearby networks can reduce speed and add delay. A wired Ethernet connection usually gives a clearer picture of the internet line itself.
- Your device: an older phone or laptop, low battery mode or a busy processor can limit how fast it can send and receive data.
- Other activity: downloads, updates, cloud backups, streaming or other people using the same network share the connection during the test.
- Test server and route: a distant server, or a long route to it, can increase ping. The nearest city is not always the fastest route.
- VPNs, proxies and security software: these can slow traffic down or send it through another location.
- Mobile networks: signal strength, movement and tower congestion can change a mobile result from minute to minute.

4. Limits of testing inside a browser
Hyndr runs in your web browser, so nothing needs to be installed. Browsers protect you by limiting what a website can see and do, and that also limits some measurements:
- Browsers cannot always see true network packet loss. Any loss figure Hyndr shows is an experimental estimate based on failed or late test requests. A value of 0% does not prove that no data was lost.
- Very fast connections may be limited by the browser or device, so they can appear slower than they really are.
- If you switch tabs, lock your screen or let the device sleep, the browser may pause the test. Hyndr marks results it cannot trust as incomplete or less reliable.
When a measurement could not be taken properly, Hyndr shows it as not available rather than guessing a number.
5. A result is not proof against your internet provider
A Hyndr result can help you describe a problem clearly, but it does not prove that your internet service provider (ISP) has broken a contract or law. Internet plans usually promise speeds "up to" a figure, and many things inside your home can lower a result.
If you plan to contact your provider, stronger evidence usually comes from:
- Several tests on different days and at different times.
- Tests on a device connected to the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Tests with other devices and apps paused.
- Your provider's own diagnostic tools, if they offer them.
6. Recommendations are general guidance
Hyndr suggests safe, common steps such as moving closer to the router, restarting equipment or trying a wired connection. These suggestions are general. They are not professional technical advice for your particular network.
- Only change settings you understand and are comfortable changing.
- If a device belongs to your workplace, school or landlord, ask its owner first.
- Hyndr will never ask for your router password, Wi-Fi password or internet account password. Do not enter them anywhere on this site.
7. Data usage
A complete Health Check transfers generated test data, never your personal files. It can use up to 200 MB of data, and often less because each stage stops once it has enough reliable measurements. On a mobile data plan or a connection with a data limit, this can count towards your allowance.
You can cancel a running check at any time. For details of what Hyndr saves, read the Privacy Policy.
8. We keep improving accuracy
Hyndr is in public beta. As we test in more homes and networks, we may adjust how measurements are taken and how the score is calculated. Every result records the version of the rules that produced it, so results stay explainable.
